VERY interesting note/article in the WSJ this morning. As you may recall over 122 witnesses "took the Fifth" during the probe over campaign finance irregularities chaired by Sen Thompson. Johnny Chung who is talking now has apparently stated that the Democratic Staff members of the House Government reform committee sent him a package instructing him on how to plead the Fifth during his testimony in the inquiry. Ranking Dem. Henry the Hypocrite Waxman denies that encouraging the pleading of Fifth Amendment rights was the purpose of the package and claims it was merely to explain Chung's options. Seeing as Mr. Chung had his own counsel, this excuse seems a bit farfetched to me. Why would it be the province of the committee to give legal advice to a potentially adversarial witness? Why would staffers who ought to be interested in getting to the bottom of this matter be creating obstacles to doing so? Was there any WH encouragement here? Makes one wonder. In any event, I believe this matter ought to be investigated and if the facts pan out as Chung has stated them, then Henry Waxman ought to resign immediately and in full disgrace. Write your Congressional delegation. JLA
