Whether or not the issue of abortion is sufficient to support secession is a separate argument. I think that as long as there are other expedients, such as the alteration of the composition of the judiciary or Constitutional amendment, that it is not....

One difference, is that the rebels stole the property and expelled many of the Loyalists (or "Tories"). This was simply the political cleansing that follows revolution. For some reason, it was thought that it would be desirable to have some disgruntled Englishmen (Empire Loyalists) in Canada where they would annoy the French more than the Americans. There has been no move to exile or imprison those who oppose abortion, unless they kill people.
Few people recognize how radical a change the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments made in the US -- extending the federal courts' control (especially the equal protection clause) over State oppression of citizens and person in the US.
