First Union and Dell to Offer Employee Purchase Plan; pc@home Program For Employees Will Help Drive First Union Online Services
CHARLOTTE, N.C., Aug. 16 /PRNewswire/ - Working with Dell Computer, First Union Corp. (NYSE: FTU - news) is offering corporate-standard home PCs at substantial discounts to support personal and professional employee development. Called pc@home, the program will help employees gain knowledge and productivity available from computer software, First University PC-based training programs and the Internet -- including First Union Online Banking Services.

As part of its broader e-commerce initiative, First Union has sent each employee a demo CD-ROM showcasing the ease and security afforded by First Union Online banking, billpay and brokerage.

``The bottom line is that we have nearly 70,000 employees that we want as customers,' said David Carroll, First Union's chief e-commerce officer. ``The best way to achieve that is to provide affordable, quality Dell PCs that use the same technology as those in the workplace. Plus, our employees' personal experience and comfort with First Union Online Banking Services will help potential customers sign up and 'take the plunge' so they can continue to bank when, where and how they choose.'

Launched on July 30, pc@home gives employees the opportunity to purchase a Dell PC -- and customize with accessories to meet individual needs -- via a special Dell website or toll-free number. In addition, First Union is offering special financing to facilitate purchasing at this time.

``We all know how PCs have revolutionized our lives, but not everyone has access to a home computer,' said Jack Antonini, executive vice president -- Consumer Banking Group and corporate sponsor for pc@home. ``With Dell, we're offering our employees the tools and flexibility they need to perform their best and maintain a healthy work/life balance. We've put together a great package of hardware, software and money-saving incentives that delivers tremendous value to our employees.'

The program is designed to enhance employees' overall comfort and knowledge of computers, and to offer them greater flexibility to learn software programs with PC-based education training from First University as their schedules and lifestyles allow.

``Hands down, this is a win-win for everyone involved,' said Kery Farrell, Dell employee purchase plan manager. ``Employees can build a home-based system and get something their family wants and needs. First Union can help its employees gain valuable software and PC-based training and also promote its online banking services. And Dell can add First Union employees to its growing base of satisfied customers who value Dell for quality and dependability.'

Employees may choose the corporate standard desktop PC model from Dell or add upgrades, with a laptop option expected this fall. The computers are designed with enough power to keep pace with changing technology and remain ``leading edge' to handle a variety of software applications. Additional discounts are available on related accessories, such as printers and digital cameras.

Built to each buyer's specifications, the computers are shipped direct from Dell to the employee's home. Configured with Microsoft Office '97 Small Business Edition software, every computer comes with a First Union First University training video featuring Antonini, First Union CEO Ed Crutchfield and Dell CEO Michael Dell. Dell's three-year warranty also provides onsite technical support the next business day.

The nation's sixth largest bank holding company, First Union Corp. is a leading provider of financial services to more than 16 million customers throughout the East coast and nation. The company has assets of $230 billion as of June 30, 1999, and full service offices in Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and Washington, D.C.
