REDWOOD CITY, California--Excite@Home, which provides high-speed Internet access through cable-TV lines, said it expects operating costs to increase "substantially" in the third quarter to reflect its purchase of Internet directory Excite.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company said it expects operating costs to increase sequentially from the second quarter's $29.1 million because it's the first full quarter to include Excite's operations. The company wasn't more specific about how much expenses would increase.

Excite@Home said it expects product development and engineering expenses to rise as it develops its computer network. It also said sales and marketing costs will jump as it tries to attract more subscribers and expands its products by delivering its service through set-top boxes.

General and administrative costs also are expected to rise as the company adds more administrative and executive staff, the company said.

@Home completed the acquisition of Excite on May 28. It acquired Excite to boost its content offerings on its high-speed Internet access service.
