Paul I believe that the Win32 API's should be made offically a standard (to make it perceived as more open) and because it provides a more powerful developer system interface; as compared to POSIX + SYSV. It's a 90's version of SYSV.

If the DOJ really wanted to "level the playing field" they would make the Win32 API a standard and freely available (no licensing). Rob Gingell (Sun Microsystems) argued three years ago that Sun should be providing the Windows API on Sun rather than providing SYSV API's on NT to bridge the Windows-UNIX world gap --- I agreed then and I agree now.

Also for the record I think MSFT must support Java fully in the near future; else they will lose developer confidence. Java is what most developers want to code in now; as you cited. I also think Java must move into independant hands though; a coalition of existing licensees.
