Excellent explanation. You don't want to get me started on processes and threads, because I'll over-complicate it.

The part about code and data sounds familiar: aren't there two level I caches -- one for code and one for data?

The analogy of the work-site and the tools helps but it seems to need some refining.

Would it be better to have say a mason who is the cpu (not the ceo), his skills and tools which are the programs, the thing he's building which is the output, the bricks and mortar which are the data (input) and the helper with the wheel barrow and the mixer bringing him the bricks and mortar.

Would this help to illustrate a process? Would another process be the construction of a wall on the other side of the building from where he's at now? Or would another process be another mason and the cpu is not the mason but rather the cpu is the know-how and tools that all masons share?

Is this thing dead yet?
