i've been living in South Africa for almost ten years and have seen everything first hand. crime is rampant in the country, but as you say, the mining houses know how to protect themselves, on every level of society. when Mandela was released from prison he talked about 'nationalizing the commanding heights of the economy' in his first speech. not a word about that a mere three weeks later. Anglo's chairman was suggesting at the time that Nelson may have missed out on some political realities while he was on his enforced vacation on Robben Island. the big boss of the National Mineworkers' Union, Cyril Ramaphosa, became chairman of JCI when it became clear that Mbeki would become heir to Mandela's throne. Anglo simply bought them all.
