Nihil,
When was the Emancipation Proclamation written and did it have any bearing on the South's decision to secede when ,as you have stated, not seceding would have been to the South's advantage. Also the North was blockading and disrupting commerce. That was an aggressive act against the South. Wouldn't you say the North was the aggressor and the South just acted in it's own defense against military actions at sea and inflammatory rhetoric in Washington.
