Gary re"how much more quickly does a high cash level now permit you to move to a "much more heavily hedged and/or somewhat short position"? I don't understand the relationship."

If I am going to hold a number of funds and stocks with large unrealized gains and hedge rather than sell them I need a decent amount of cash to hedge and possibly go short a bit. Since I may use a 2beta short fund as part of my hedge the cash requirement may me kept down a bit but will still be large. I already have taken a lot of gains this year so hedging a large amount will help keep taxes big but hopefully out of the stratosphere. I also use a different web broker to buy my bear fund where the transaction fee is only $24 maximum rather than Schwab which is more expensive or using the fund directly which would get my funds stuck in multiple places which would take several days to transfer around.

To hardcore trekkies who believe they listen to every minute of Moneytalk: I noticed while switching between KGO and WNTK on the internet that KGO does not broadcast roughly the last 2 minutes of moneytalk each hour. These segments begin after Bob says "This, is Moneytalk", and can either be a quick discussion with a caller, or a short monologue. Perhaps many stations omit these end-of-the-hour segments.

But not to worry: they are included in the WIOD archived shows that can be accessed via a link at bobbrinker.com. They begin at the times 50:00, 1:50:00, and 2:50:00 within the clip of each archived WIOD show.
