Japan's TDK to raise 1999/2000 capex by 50 percent
TOKYO, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Japan's TDK Corp said on Tuesday it would boost its 1999/2000 capital spending by 50 percent from its originally planned target to meet strong demand for its parts used in computer electronics, mobile phones and audio-visual products.

TDK said it would raise its capital spending for the year to March 2000 to around 80 billion yen from its earlier plan of 55 billion yen.

It will spend 10 billion yen to install a new production line in Japan to produce next-generation magnetic resistive heads, a component of computer hard disk drives used to read information, a company spokesman said.

It also plans to boost production capacity in September for components for cellular phones and audio-visual products, he said.

Manufacturers of audio-visual products and cellular phones are stepping up orders for parts and components following a recovery in Asian economies and cutbacks in inventories, analysts said.
