After hours AMAT up (last paragraph)

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Hewlett Packard Co. (HWP) shares fell slightly in after-hours trading Monday despite the computer giant's better-than-expected third-quarter earnings report.

Hewlett-Packard shares fell to 109 3/4 in late market activity, down from their regular-session close of 110 5/16.

The company beat analysts' estimates by 5 cents a share when it reported earnings, excluding charges, of 85 cents a share shortly after Monday's market close.

Hewlett-Packard said computer product revenue rose to record levels, driving overall earnings, while revenue from the company's computer and imaging unit rose 12% to $10.3 billion from the year ago quarter.

Of its overseas operations, Hewlett-Packard said European revenue rose 13% to $4 billion from last year and Asia Pacific revenue rose 24% to $1.7 billion.

Meanwhile Applied Materials Inc. (AMAT) shares inched slightly higher after market close, ahead of the semiconductor company's third-quarter earnings, expected to be released Tuesday. Applied Material shares rose to 71 1/2 in late trading, up from their regular-session close of 70 1/2.
