E -- I deliberately narrowed the question to a single species to allow comment on specific rescue measures. It doesn't matter what the species is or what range of extraordinary effort is put in play. The only thing that matters is your personal opinion.

Most of us probably agree that many inner city kids don't have very bright prospects but few of us take personal action to bring about a change. It's too easy, for even the most socially liberal, to simply say, "it's horrible, I feel bad, something must be done -- more money -- now I feel good."

I am more interested in knowing what environmentalists consider appropriate intervention to solve a specific problem -- in this case, rescue of a species (pick your own -- dog, horse, whale, eagle, etc.).

Please excuse my clumsiness in stating the question. There's a follow-up question that's a doozy.
