thanks lorne. Its odd that there are no mines in the area but with Amplats and Impala spending a lot of money maybe there will be.

The area they are looking for platinoids and finding some is called the East Bull Lake intrusion. It is a Gabbro somewhat older than the Inco Sudbury ?intrusion?/basin and as such was ignored by Inco as non productive of massive sulphide horizons. Inco has steadfastly refused to look for primary Platinum deposits, preferring instead to only mine Platinum as an adjunct to Cu/Ni deposits. Surely their Shebandowan operation is a contradiction to this position but is still considered a nickel mine although without the Pt values it would not survive.

East Bull Lake was withdrawn from staking while the government considered it for a place to bury nuclear waste. After a five year study it was opened for staking again and a paper was written on its Pt potential. Recently this potential which was pointed to by earlier explorers has been hinted at again by surface sampling and some rather intriguing Pt assays. Too early to tell if it has mine potential. It may be similar to the Thunder Bay occurrences (which are analogous to the nearby Stillwater mine) and of which the Lac Des Isles mine is one. Lac des Isles is 12 million tons of about 1/10 of an ounce Pt metals in an open pit situation.
