Re: The story that interests me more is the death (murder?) of Pope John Paul I. It was rumored that "the smiling pope" was ready to initiate major reforms within the Vatican and he was gonna chop off a few heads. This story is elucidated by David Yallop in his book In God's Name, which I have here in the house but have not read yet.

Charles,

John Paul I's assassination is a secret de Polichinelle, that is an open secret! Even loyal, liberal Catholics (including a high school teacher of mine) are persuaded that he was eliminated by a corrupt, worried clerical mob. I read D. Yallop's scoop about 15 years ago and I recommend you to read it as well.

Because of the deceased's personality, no post-mortem examination was ever allowed as to the cause of the Pope's death. Furthermore, in the early 1980s, the Catholic Church was in a zone of turbulences --the Banco Ambrosiano fiasco, Aldo Moro's assassination and the collusion between the Mafia and Italy's political establishment, etc. Cardinal Albino Luciani was an insider as regards Italy's political schemes and the Vatican's intrigues.... As Pope elect, under the name of John Paul Ist, he wouldn't have got so easily fooled by his entourage and he'd likely have called Mgr Marcinkus to account for the Vatican's slush fund. Hence his replacement with Karol Vojtila, a harmless outsider who wouldn't snoop around into the Vatican's closet.
