Fortunately, CSCO hasn't been making any acquisitions in recent years. <g>

was the capability to maintain this software retained
This is a serious and growing problem in the software industry. The people at a company which is aquired are often treated poorly. Their culture and traditions are transformed to the parent company. Many of their friends in bookeeping, HR, etc are fired. Even the veterans change status from experienced leader to new kid on the block. In today's job market a software professional does not have to put up with any crap and they are likely to leave.

This is compouned by the increasing secrecy that companies hold their interfaces and program quirks. Instead of publishing these vital records they are often left in the programmers head.

You would think that if a company is valuable enough to aquire, often at a premium, that they would value the contributors the same way.
