Sonic Introduces DVD Publishing Tools for Avid Digital Editing Systems

Sonic DVD Fusion for Avid Systems Brings DVD Publishing Under $8K

SAN FRANCISCO--Sonic Solutions introduced at the DVD Pro Conference Sonic DVD Fusion, a new solution for seamlessly publishing DVD video from Avid Technology, Inc.'s digital editing systems.

Using technology from Sonic's industry-leading DVD Creator system, Sonic DVD Fusion for Avid systems enables digital transcoding of Avid video and audio files into MPEG-2 video and Dolby Digital audio, provides extensive interactive DVD authoring and allows for direct recording to DVD-R.

"We are excited to be working with Sonic Solutions in bringing a complete, end-to-end interactive video publishing system to market," said Paul Henderson, VP and General Manager of Avid's Macintosh Products Group. "Our users have been clamoring for DVD output, and Sonic's new DVD Fusion provides them an easy-to-use, inexpensive means of adding this capability."

Avid Video Transcoding

Sonic DVD Fusion for Avid systems includes breakthrough software and hardware transcoding technology that enables direct digital encoding of MPEG-2 video from Avid files without the need to lay video content off to tape. This results in the highest-quality MPEG-2 video and avoids the signal degradation that can occur with multi-step digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital conversion.

DVD Fusion also includes Dolby Digital 5.1 surround audio encoding, as well as support for uncompressed PCM audio. Sonic's transcoder can function either within an Avid video workstation or across a network.

"The majority of DVD-published content originates on non-linear video editing systems," said Mark Ely, Director of Product Marketing for Sonic Solutions. "Sonic DVD Fusion links video editing and DVD publishing with a single, easy-to-use peripheral for Avid workstations."

Sonic DVD Fusion Authoring

Based on Sonic's award-winning DVD Creator technology, DVD Fusion gives video producers and editors a comprehensive set of tools for DVD-Video authoring, including:

-- Drag-and-drop authoring - Intuitive, drag-and-drop assembly of video clips, audio clips and menu graphics make it easy to create interactive DVD titles.
-- Multiple audio streams - Eight unique multi-channel audio streams can be assembled for each video stream. -- Complete subtitle support - DVD Fusion supports up to thirty-two subpicture streams for displaying subtitles or on-screen graphics.
-- Integrated DVD title verification - Integrated expert systems technology is used to ensure that each DVD title is compatible across the broadest range of set-top and PC-based DVD playback devices.
-- Motion video menus - Composited video menus from Avid systems can easily be imported as motion video to enhance the DVD viewing experience.
-- Real-time proofing - Real-time proofing allows projects to be reviewed on the CPU display or an external video monitor, enabling fast feedback during authoring and quality checks prior to recording on DVD-R.
-- Direct DVD-R support - DVD Fusion enables single-step project-to-DVD-R recording without the need to store intermediary files.
"Sonic DVD Fusion is a breakthrough product for Avid editors," added Henderson. "With DVD Fusion, content our users generate with Avid Media Composer or Avid Xpress systems can be published on DVD. We look forward to continuing to collaborate with Sonic as we further tighten the integration of DVD publishing and video production."

Sonic DVD Fusion is available in two configurations for the Macintosh. A software-based version includes MPEG-2 video transcoding and Dolby Digital audio encoding, compatible with QuickTime video or audio files, for a suggested U.S. list price of $7,999. A hardware-accelerated version speeds MPEG transcoding by as much as 500 percent and in addition enables real-time VBR and CBR encoding of video content from component and composite video inputs; it has a suggested U.S. list price of $11,999. Sonic plans to begin product shipments in August 1999.
