I remember feeling angry about it myself. I felt as if I were being slighted. I could understand the impulse to screw on the couch, a cathartic gesture indeed, but I never dated anyone whose family had a room like that. Thank goodness.

A few weeks ago I went to an open house in a house I admired but could never afford, I know I posted about it before, but what I didn't mention was that the sumptuous downstairs recreation room with the wide plank flooring, the nineteenth century hand-carved mantle, and the antique bar fittings in the wet bar, was being used as a storage room, with boxes stacked up, empty suitcases, an exercise bike strewn with old clothing, etc. These people were way up the social scale, but their social life wasn't any better than my grandma's.

It made me feel bad because I keep telling myself, if I had a nicer house I'd be able to invite people over and I'd have more friends, but maybe I'm not any different really, it's just one more sad dream.
