I think it's the middle class wanting to be upper. I was brainwashed into thinking formal living rooms and dining rooms were necessary (by my mother)- but I finally decided it was wasted space- so now in the formal living room - by the uncomfortable sofa, and the two lyre based Duncan Phyfe endtables (that are fairly useless pieces of furniture- but very pretty) is a giant and very messy roll top computer desk. And the floor all around the desk is piled with crap- because I have made the room "useful".

My dad's cousin in Mississippi had a great room at the lake house.
Sort of a combined den and parlor. It was huge.
It had five or six large couches in it, and plenty more overstuffed chairs.
And it still looked open.
