<Well I had been led to believe that coppermine would be competitive with the K7. a 3-10% improvement doesnot bode well for Coppermine at all.>

I don't know. Sounds pretty competitive to me. Closer to Athlon performance at lower manufacturing cost.

Yeah, yeah, this was the main selling point for AMD for the past two years. But the difference is volume; Intel has it, AMD is still trying.

In any case, I'd be impressed if Coppermine can close the gap in 3D Studio Max performance. Then dual "Socketmines" should be a very compelling rendering platform, both in terms of performance and in price/performance.

Kash this is all rumor at this point and I don't want to make a big deal about this but you are not being entirely forthright here. You quoted the lowest number and you misquoted it. It's 5-10%, not 3-10% as you posted. If SPECint95 improved by that amount it would outperform the Athlon at the same clock speed, and that's at only 100MHz FSB and only SDRAM, but you interpret that as "Coppermine sucks". The 133MHz FSB performs even better and still doesn't show what benefit might be had from DRDRAM. A possible 21%+ improvement (maybe more with DRDRAM) in FP is certainly significant as well. All this is of course completely unconfirmed and pure rumor at this time but I think your reaction is off the mark.
