The story that was posted here from the Nikkei Net said that they were going to begin "trial service" of their wireless internet service on October 1! Since they only initiated discussions with Tepco in June, I have to assume that Tepco had been preparing to do this trial by themselves and Softbank and Microsoft hopped aboard at the last minute. (Big utility companies are not noted for rapid response.)

Full scale service is scheduled for next summer. They aim to sign up several million subscribers in three years.

The service will be high speed wideband in the range of one megabit per second. This is more than an order of magnitude faster than most of us currently have with a typical dial up modem and around four times faster than my new ADSL connection.
