Chile is one of the world's most geologically active areas and has been for eons. As we hear reports today of the Mag 7.8 earthquake in Turkey-recall that the worldest strongest earthquake ever recorded occurred in Chile. It measured a Mag 9.5! The scale is a log function-ie the Chilean quake was something like 17 times more powerful....
