That was a decent article, except for this rather odd thesis:

If the company were to purchase at least 3 million new cable modems, as well as provide the service and support for its new data customers, that would tack even more capital expenditure costs to Armstrong's balance sheet, additional charges he wants to avoid.

Therefore, Armstrong needs to find a partner with experience in the data business to help him defray his upfront costs. That partner is Excite@Home.


Ah- I see. AT&T needs @home so it wont be in the modem renting/resale business! Huh? AT&T will probably spend $150 billion on cable properties and upgrading and they need @home so they dont have to rent 3 million modems? Ever hear of customer owned modems?
