Pete,

I traded about 5 years from my desk. My retirement was enforced, i.e. I got laid off. Considering they were paying me a fortune to do nothing (and let me trade all day), I'd probably still be doing it if it weren't for the pink slip.

Once out on my own, there was never a question of going back to another similar job (claims manager for an insurance company).

Have to add that I'm more fortunate than most. I have two sources of income. My web site does very well and that takes the pressure off my trading performance. In fact, the site has grown in lock step with my trading profits. There's lot to be said for keeping your stress level down while making trade decisions.

Alan

I'll throw in my two cents also. I was a programmer before deciding to do this from home. I told my manager at IBM that I wanted to work a partial day (evenings) while trading/investing during the day. He agreed and so from 1995 to 1997 I traded at home during the day and went in to work 4 hours/day evenings. Chucked it all summer of 1997 and have not regretted it since. As with KM, I also prefer to be on my own, although I suspect most here trade much more actively than I do. I'm more of a position trader, taking what I consider significant positions in a very few stocks, usually when I feel they have had the crap beat out of them. It's just my style and it has worked for me.

Regards,
John
