Re: WSTL's Marc Zionts Interview

Thread,
Just read an interview with WSTL's CEO, Mark Zionts. It was from April 1999 Wall Street Transcript (don't know if it's online) and I thought Marc did a very good job of summarizing WSTL's positioning in the marketplace.

Here is one, FWIW, excerpt for those that can't quite figure out WSTL's value. Even though it's a little rah, rah, it still makes some interesting points.

Question: If you were sitting down now with a group of potential long-term investors, what reasons would you give them to invest in Westell Technologies?

Answer: What I would give them, specifically is that right now (April 8, 1999), we believe that the value of our company isn't reflected in our equity by the market. We have a very solid business of telco access products. We are restructuring our DSL business in such a way that it retains a DSL play, so we'll participate as the DSL market happens without the losses we've had in the past. And, hidden within inside us is this hidden gem, this services business that we believe is going to be worth a tremendous amount of money, and someday, may even spin-off in its own equity for share holders. So, it's kind of like when I see our stock and price, if somebody has interest in DSL, if somebody has interest in telco services, Internet services, they can kind of like buy an open-ended call option with no expiration date in us. We're trading right now a an option price, not at an equity price.

So I think that, in particular, a value investor, horizon fund manager, somebody who has a value growth combination that we are an attractive company to look at. We've got a a great reputation, a great set of customers, great infrastructures. And now we're doing something to fix our real problems, losses, and turn it around into something meaningful. I can tell you that I've bought share in the open market. I'm excited about that. Each time I get more and each time I get awarded some more options. I'm pretty psyched because of what we are running at.
