212 And Counting
18-Aug-99 00:05 ET

Remember the good ole days when pure play Internet stocks could be counted on one hand: Netscape, Spyglass (SPYG), Netcom, UUNet, and America Online (AOL)? Three of those five have since been folded into other companies, but plenty more have risen to take their place. By our tally, there are now 212 pure play Internet companies. And an astonishing 113 of those companies have come public in 1999. Now more than ever, it is important to make sense of this mess.

Most attempts to sort out the Internet sector have ended in illogical groupings. Briefing.com has therefore taken a stab at designating Internet industries, and then placing all 212 companies into one of these industries. After much debate, we ended up with six Internet industries. Those selections, and their brief definitions are as follows:

Ecommerce-consumer: companies that sell goods/services to consumers over the Internet.
Ecommerce-business: companies that sell goods/services to businesses over the Internet.
Content: companies that provide information or community services via the Internet to consumers and/or businesses.
Connectivity: Internet service providers (ISPs), application service providers (ASPs), hosting/co-location, backbone providers.
Software: companies that design and sell software for use on the Internet, intranets, or extranets.
Services: companies that provide services to businesses operating on the Internet, including consulting, advertising, and marketing.
After much experimenting, we found that it was relatively simple to place all 212 companies into one of these six industries. There were of course a few category-busters, most notably AOL and CMGI, but we felt comfortable with judging the former to be primarily a means of connecting to the Net, and the latter a financial service company managing Net assets. There were some other close calls, particularly with companies that combines content and commerce. In these cases, we chose the industry that best reflected the company's strategic goals.

And finally, we did not include any hardware companies such as Cisco (CSCO), Juniper (JNPR), or Redback (RBAK), because once you opened the door to any hardware companies, you had to open the door to virtually all of them. These companies are excellent investment plays on the Internet, but we will not define them as pure plays.

Keep in mind that our decisions were based the product being sold and the target market. We were not concerned with what sorts of activities the companies made possible. For example, Ariba (ARBA) is a software company rather than a business-to-business ecommerce company because it designs software that makes B2B transactions possible, but it does not sell its product to businesses over the Net. Or take Doubleclick (DCLK); though the company sells a service to businesses and delivers the product (ads) over the Net, it is not using the Net to make the sale, it only uses the Net to deliver the final product.

You will of course not agree with all of our choices, but we hope that the tables below help in sorting through the increasingly diverse Internet sector. Next week, we will look at these industries in conjunction with the business models that these companies employ. In so doing, identication of solid investing opportunities will become much easier. For example, you can identify industries that you like, and then define business models you like, perhaps advertising, or a slice of transactions, or the sale of a physical good. By looking at the market in which the company is operating and the manner in which it generates revenue, we will attempt to construct a valuable framework for analyzing Net companies.

The industry and company listings appear below, ranked by market cap using Tuesday's closing prices. Feel free to send feedback regarding companies we missed or companies that we placed in the wrong industry. We can't promise return emails given the likely volume of feedback, but we do promise to consider all suggestions.
