PDL you wrote All of the @Venture investments fit into the "synergy" model (kieretzu?) that the sum of the ... .

I am not sure but I don't see too much synergy in the @Ventures - family gatherings/geneology, furniture, car parts, athletes, original art, banking for business, etc. To me, it just looks like one-off, hopefully decent, Internet applications with good management and a niche. And not to be too negative there are some pretty hefty partners in @Ventures. Paul Allen, Microsoft, Intel, etc.

However, I thought I saw synergy in the CMGI holdings, ICAST, Engage, Magnitude, Navinet, Navisite, etc. And I believe it is CMGI that is buying AV and not the @Ventures - at least they are paying for it with CMGI stock. With AV and ICAST you do start to see a long term strategy that you could begin connecting the @Venture companies on an as appropriate basis.

That is why I was upset with the interview because I think the days of IPO mania are mostly behind us - there will be exceptions. And if we are primarily an incubator I see less future for CMGI. Look greed/human nature killed the IPO market - supply and demand. It worked for a while, we made money and now we should be on to the next phase since I still strongly believe in the Internet. If I am right about the death of IPO's and everyone else is right about how smart DW is then we should start to see some framework developing for going forward.

Again, I encourage everyone to go to cmgi.com and look at the companies in the @Ventures and CMGI Internet group. You can click on each one and get a mission statement. It does not take long and it gives you a good feel for what you own.

Anyway, the stock is happy today so maybe I should complain more often <g>
