Well, I think Alta Vista does make sense strategically given Engage etc. But you know ICGE got an exemption from the SEC at least re the mutual fund issue and I would suspect that CMGI should be asking for the same treatment. The tax issue is more complicated--I think that if they are deemed a holding company then they have to distribute their income annually or be penalized--so it is a real economic issue that affects the stock. (Someone with a stronger tax background can jump in anytime. I just used to work for Imagine Films and we had to skirt this issue all the time.) My hunch is that they really had to deal with the holding company issue--remember it's us shareholders at large and the guys running this whose pocket books get pinched--and given that problem Alta Vista was the candidate that made the most strategic sense. I'm sure they can parlay it into something cool, but I think if they sell it, they will face the same issue. This is why IMHO they really need to get an operating company strategy together.
