<<The bigger Dell gets, the more leverage it has to get suppliers to take inventory risk; the more leverage, the less inventory. Michael's goal remains 0 inventory. While he puzzles how to get way below a week, Compaq struggles to stay below a month. Even three years ago Gateway or Hewlett-Packard might have made a leap to Dell's leverage. Only a colossal screw up in execution could unseat Dell from this cost advantage now. Having met Michael and worked with his senior management, I don't see it. As several bears have pointed out, the direct CONCEPT can be imitated. Dell's leverage with suppliers cannot.>>

Happy Cat: Thank you for sharing your insights....

I also continue to be LONG on DELL for the LONG RUN <G>!!

Best Regards,

Scott

Happy Cat, thanks for posting that item from the Motley Fool. It's the best thing I have ever seen posted on this board.

HC- Great post and analysis by that threadsters...The only point he left out...and one that Chuzz (rightly) points out: Dell is building quite a cash hoard...which is currently acheiving a (relatively) low rate of return...The author's analyst dealt only (I believe) in Dell growing its current business(s)....

There is/will be additional growth possible, either thru acquisition or Dell entering "extension" segments, if Dell is wise about its future investment of this cash hoard.

But then again, Dell has looked pretty wise on most things for many years....

So, in conclusion, it is possible that his targets are LOW!

RE:Happy Cat-What a fabulous post (that gentleman really is informed)-Please know that Kim and I very much did appreciate your kindness as well as your husband's at the annual meeting.-----DELL has been fighting the Merril Lynch propaganda machine spouting off about CPQ for ten years-it worked and hundreds of MM's bought into the myth!Yesterday the clouds began to part and the sun finally (ten years late) shown through.Best regards from Kim and Bill
