AOL says subscribers top 18 million
DULLES, Va., Aug 17 (Reuters) - America Online Inc. <AOL.N>
said on Tuesday that worldwide membership in its online service
has exceeded 18 million.
AOL said that a new software upgrade is expected to bring
new members this fall.
"We think AOL's momentum will continue this fall with the
launch of our next-generation client, AOL 5.0.," said AOL
President Bob Pittman.
"Like our past software upgrades, we think 5.0 will be a
catalyst for membership growth, time spent online, member
retention, and e-commerce," said Pittman.
The leading Internet media company said its membership
growth is ahead of last summer's pace. This year's membership
climb from 17 million to 18 million members took 125 days
compared to last summer, when it took 133 days to add one
million members to reach 13 million.
More than 50 percent of AOL accounts now log on at least
five days weekly and nearly one-third are using the service
every day of the week, AOL said.
AOL's CompuServe unit is experiencing strong membership
growth since being acquired, with its current rebate offers
linked to personal computer sales exceeding expectations, AOL
said.
Shares gained 1-10/16 to 96-9/16 on the New York Stock
Exchange early Tuesday. AOL shares had fallen to near a
six-month low this month, but recovered some ground in the past
week.
The new software will such features as You've Got
Pictures!, My Calendar, AOL Plus, and ShopAOL, he said.
