Wal-mart, the largest name in U.S. supermarkets, currently operates around 100 gasoline units in the Southeast and plans to open 45
more in the near term. Idaho-based Albertson's, which owns over 1,000 U.S. supermarkets, aims to build 600 gasoline stations in the
next five years. And California-based Costco (Nasdaq:COST - news) plans 100 gasoline outlets by 2001, just to name a few.


I would have thought Costco, with their large land size locations would be a natural to have gas stations almost at every store! I wonder if self-service states will bear the brunt or fruit of the "Hypermarket" stations as opposed to the state I reside in ... Oregon, which is anti-self service for the time being.
