Yes, that attorney cited in the WSJ article is very ill-informed about the dynamics of shorting. It a very stabilizing process. The buffering of the short sales help attenuate surges and the subsequent buy-ins help prevent price collapse. For example, the pump on IMAA perhaps may have indeed hit 20 if there were not lots of short shares to fill the demand. On the other hand its crash in the next few days will be much gentler and orderly as shorts buy to cover and hence support the price.
