<<HP's decision, announced at a conference here, is the first time that an insider and main proponent of the chip has recommending skipping it.>>

Very significant, positive development for AMD:

With fewer customers adopting Mercede, Intel has to rely on the existing IA-32 chips to make its financial numbers work until its 7th generation chip and new version of IA-64 coming along.

Intel may be forced to be less agressive on the pricing front in its battle with AMD as a result of this HP Mercede abandonment.

Yougang - RE: "HP says skip the Merced chip, wait for new version"

HA!

HP must thing this big chuck of silicon really is a DUD!

Will Silicon Graphics be next? Remember that they, like HP, decided to continue their processor development past what they had previously planned, and even further past the release of MerDUD.
