Maui Trip Report. Just got back from 8 days in Maui. Accommodations: Wailea Outrigger. This is the more moderate option among a string of luxury hotels. I highly recommend it for a comfortable, more casual stay. Room rate: about $200/night in a package deal for an ocean-front room. From what I saw, Wailea would be my first choice for a Maui stay. Lovely beaches and views, gorgeous surroundings. However, if good non-hotel meals are important to you, Lahaina is a better option. Restaurants: 1) A Pacific Cafe in Kihei. Excellent Pacific Rim cuisine. Moderately high-priced. 2) Longhi's in Lahaina. Excellent food in an informal setting with ocean view. Lahaina has a number of good restaurants. This is certainly one of them. Moderately high prices. 3) Salad bar at the Wailea Renaissance hotel. Can't beat the $13.95 price for a good meal in a lovely setting. Daytrips: 1) Biking down Haleakala. 38 miles of coasting from 10k elevation to a gorgeous beach at Paia. Gives you nice exposure to a variety of Maui locales: crater, mountain, upland ranch, sugar/pineapple fields, cowboys towns and ocean beach. I highly recommend the Maui Downhill outfitters - professional, well-organized, security-conscious and lots of fun to boot. Price: about $110/person for all-day trip. 2) Snorkling at Molokini. (Yes, I did remember to think of you guys there. <g>) Highly recommended trip to half-submerged crater. Our trip also included Turtletown, an area near Makena for viewing turtles (really worth seeing). I would not recommend our outfitter (Lani Kai) as they ran low on food (cheap!). Price: about $80/person for a half-day trip. 3) Horseback ride into the Haleakala crater. Largest crater in the world (12 miles by 7 miles, I believe). Hiking is the other, cheaper option. Either way, the crater is worth doing, for a beautiful, eerie, moonlike landscape. I plan to see it at sunrise next time. Price: about $130/person for full day. I highly recommend Pony Express as the outfitter. 4) Road to Hana. Levy is our expert here. We loved it, but as the drive is long, we did not see nearly as much as we would like. Oheo Gulch is really worth seeing. I plan to surprise my wife with 3 days at Hana ranch next June for our 20th anniversary. Then we can do everything Levy recommends! Rob
