you are full of questions today ,and I dont mind talking about it atall I have been retired now for five years ,I will try to remember

there was no x-ray done on locomotive ,magna-flux was used extensivly ,no m.i.g. or t.i.g. was done on underframes ,6010 roots and 7018 caps became obsolete in the late 1960,s,we used flux-core wire with c02 gas sheild,I cant remember the wire strengths, untill we started the armoured vehicle for the US marines ,then with the expertise of many we developed the c25 process ,useing .035 and .045 high speed wire feeders that has become so common in all the welding procedures,
In my dept. in one corner we welded the centre bearing to a center plate that was later welded to the under frame in the south trunion
That weld does all the pulling ,braking etc for the whole power unit ,that weld was so critical ,it was done automatical ,and any failure resulted in scrap ,,That is just the beginning ,I began my heavy steel experience in 1952,as an apprentice on the good old CNR
Have a good day
