I opened an account specifically to get Red Hat IPO shares. I was successful, but not without hassle. I got 100 shares. Some of the affinity clients got 400, I know - Read the article in Salon. Read some of the E*Trade IPO Alert thread to get a flavor of how pissed off people were.

I am reasonably certain that general E*Trade customers got no more than 100 shares each, which means that at least some got 0. The people in the affinity program got no more than 400 shares each, which means that everyone in that program received at least 100 shares.

If you're in the general E*Trade pool for a hot IPO, I think your chances are not too good, from what I've heard.
