ELmre, Your logic is sound. I suspect that is why they have the irongate ready as they foresaw this. Not well enough to makes it fast enought, so I suspect there will be an irongate II coming down the pike this fall. It will be in design now as AMD also does not want to be prey to Intel versus Via lawsuit stopping via(and others) Then they would be well and truly scuppered.
Jerry is learning as time goes by. Wall is hard, head is soft...pain ensues, so he may be allowing others to make better decisions.
I sure would like to know whay Raza really left? I have never seen any viable explanation. Some have blamed personality clash? Perhaps Jerry did a bonehead thing against Razas express wish and R walked? Or a series of petty small things, the kind Jerry is prone to do, built up and exceeded a threshold and R walked.

Elmer Re <<I don't think Athlon will ever be a
successful product...>>

At least it not just foil any more!

AMD designed a good chip and started manufacturing it at good speed bins. Have you noticed that the 600 MHz is just as available as the 500 MHz? Bin splits are good.

It is very hard to say whether it will be successful or not, so far so good. Athlon does not need to be a smashing success (like the Pentium pro core) for AMD's share to move substantially higher. A moderate success (20% market share in 12 months, ASP of $180) is plenty good with me.
