Hi Rachel -- The Dish TV programs are sent via satellite to your home in MPEG-2 format -- they have already been compressed by DiviCom encoders at the headend. Therefore, Dish does not need to encode the signals received in your home. However, it does need a hard disc drive to store the compressed signals for playback. Dish can used the same decoder for displaying signals from the satellite or for displaying signals recorded on the hard disc.
