Carl Re << as aggressively as they are priced it would seem that AMD believes it can supply quite a lot of chips because at these prices the demand should be quite sizeable.>>

Only if Athlon gets into the midsize and corporate market. I highly doubt that the consumer market can digest more that a million or so per quarter.

I have no idea about your MB question, I think its too early to know but maybe someone else can give it a shot.

regards,

Mani

Carl - RE: "By the way, I would like to buy one for some floating point work. What is the best motherboard, the Microstar, the Gigabyte, or the FIC? And when and where can I get one? I'd be perfectly happy with a 500, but if I have to pay a bit more to get a higher grade I will."

Call the vendors at Pricewatch to get an update on motherboard availability. Custom Computer Systems Inc CCS already has the Athlon 500, 550, and 600 in, but motherboards aren't expected until Aug. 24 - Sep. 3.

Paragon Comp says they will have motherboards by FIC, Gigabyte, and Microstar in 2 weeks.

Components Direct says they will have FIC motherboards in at the end of the week.

Shophereusa says they will ship Athlons and motherboards on Aug. 27.

This info is accurate as of Monday when I called these vendors.

Carl,
Toms Hardware gives the slight edge to the Microstar. I'd say the Gigabyte would be next. The FIC only has one ISA slot I think.
They all perform about the same...very slight edge to the Microstar on some 3D stuff. All perform equal to AMDs "Fester" motherboard.
It's been my experience that Gigabyte makes quality motherboards.
I'd go either Microstar or Gigabyte.
