DOG-GONE
A dog sentenced to death by a Tanzanian court for having an
offensive name, was shot in the province of Rukwa on 27
February after an appeal was rejected. The dog, named
Immigration by its owner, John Kachela, died because its name
was deemed insulting to a "highly respected and law-abiding
government department". [R] 3 Mar 1998.

SPEECH DEFECT
Robert Woof, Labour MP for Blaydon on Tyneside for 23 years,
died in November aged 86. He was one of the least-known
members of the House of Commons because his speeches
were virtually unreportable. "We are passing so rapidly through
so many moving events," he once stated, "that it is impossible to
avoid a haunting sense of meaning, because we seem to be in
the throe of conditions which are inexorable." D.Telegraph, 1
Dec 1997.

BEAN COUNTER
A Kenyan doctor at a clinic north of Nairobi removed a bean that
Jacqueline Wambui, six, had accidentally stuck in her ear while
playing. He demanded £3.50, but the girl's father, Stephan
Muchina, offered the £2.70 he had on him and asked to pay 80p
later. The doctor refused and pushed the bean back in the girl's
ear. Mr Muchina reported the incident to the local police station
and the doctor was arrested on unspecified charges. [R] 19 Feb
1998.

One of China's giant pandas has died at the age of 30,
exceeding the average panda life expectancy by 10 years.
Qiang Qiang expired on 28 January in Chengdu, Sichuan
province, where she had been moved to receive medical
treatment. She had lived for 22 years at a zoo in Shenyang, but
showed signs of senility about 10 years ago. Hong Kong
Standard, 21 Feb 1998.

OUT OF THEIR SKULLS
Thieves have made off with the skulls of St Philbert and St
Lazare from cathedral display cases in Burgundy. Sun, 28 Jan
1998.

CUCKOO CROCK
At the end of January, residents in the Northstead area of
Scarborough claimed to have heard the first cuckoo. But
Hezakiah Johnson, a corporation road cleaner, said: "I wait until
a crowd gathers at the Northstead bus stop and then I go into the
park nearby and do the cuckoo. They are all taken in. I used to
do the nightingale when I had me teeth in." Times, 6 Feb 1998.

HAIRY TALE
A bearded woman was shot dead in Portland, Oregon, after she
was mistaken for a man. Jacqueline Anderson, 29, who had a full
beard, was talking to a woman friend whose lover saw her and
thought she was a rival. D.Telegraph, 27 Feb 1998.
