Hey, I used '999999' as an end of file marker in some applications!

Too bad September 9th is either '090999' or '990909'

Bill,

Some GPS units doubtlessly will fail, at least temporarily. Mostly it'll be the cheap handheld ones used for hiking/etc.

Any certified aviation unit is required to have updates done, so no issue there.

Besides, most commercial aircraft don't even have GPS. Airlines are very stingy about upgrading avionics, and a GPS addition to the Flight Management System on most airliners is a 100K+ effort.

Even on the newer ones, which have been delivered with GPS, there is no approval for GPS as "sole means of navigation." The airplane must have alternate navigation systems in place.

And of course it's worth mentioning that GPS cannot be used for precision approaches, which are the most critical piece of the flight. The technology just isn't there yet...

Borders announces a loss of $0.03 a share. How poorly are they doing. The best though is that Borders.com only did $3.3 million in sales in the second quarter as opposed to the $40 Barnes and Noble.Com did and the several hundred million Amazon did.

Crappy company, crappy business, should not trade above book value of $7 per share.

Bill,

Hear anything from "C.K. Houston" about the lack of airplane crashes this weekend?

[Before anybody writes, the crash in Hong Kong appears to be pilot/weather related. Navigation would not have been an issue, since he DID make it all the way to the runway before anything went wrong]
