Well, looks like I must be wrong about the type of monkey, but I do remember Japan. And the story stuck in my mind, but I have no idea where I read it. Or any idea how to go about finding it.

OK, found it, using Google.com (thanks, Joan, it's really, really good!): it was Macaques, I got the name of the female monkey wrong, it was Imo, but I got the rest right. Here's an article in the popular press, I read mine in a science textbook in Anthropology class, I think.
