Duke/Fluor Daniel to build Sonat power plant

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Aug 19 (Reuters) - Duke Energy Corp. (NYSE:DUK - news) said Duke/Fluor Daniel was awarded a contract by Sonat Inc.'s (NYSE:SNT - news) West Georgia Generating Co. LP subsidiary to provide engineering, procurement and construction services for a 650-megawatt dual fuel, natural gas and distillate oil-fired power plant in Upson County, Ga.

The power plant will be designed to use four General Electric Co (NYSE:GE - news) gas turbines in simple-cycle operation, Duke spokesman John Barnett said Thursday.

The $180 million power plant, which will be built within the Thomaston Industrial Park in Upson County, is expected to be fully operational by June 1, 2000, providing electricity to serve the summer peak demand, Duke said.

A significant portion of the electricity from the power plant will be sold to Southern Co.'s (NYSE:SO - news) Georgia Power under an existing power sales agreement.

Duke/Fluor Daniel's contract value was not disclosed.

The company and Fluor Corp's (NYSE:FLR - news) Fluor Daniel formed Duke/Fluor Daniel in 1989 to provide engineering, procurement, construction, and operating plant services for fossil-fueled electric power generation facilities worldwide.
