Well, that is interesting, thanks. I have no problem with the idea that there may be some rudimentary "culture" in the higher order animals, although I still think the chasm is profound. But let me clarify what I meant by incidental: children pick up speech "naturally", since speaking is, in a sense, instinctive. The particular language they pick up is "cultural", and allows them access to a broader range of culture. When they are instructed to read, they are being deliberately taught, but when they first learn to speak, the learning is incidental.....
