John,

I think full disclosure is his best bet. If the last time he used drugs was 7 years ago, I personally wouldn't hold it against him.

I think the potential funeralgate situation is the one that is much more dangerous to his campaign. it will depend on what, if anything, he actually did wrong.

Here is the quote from the Dallas Morning News 8-19:

Mr. Bush's statement came in response to a question from The Dallas Morning News about whether, as president, he would insist that his appointees answer drug-use questions contained in the standard FBI background check.
"As I understand it, the current form asks the question, 'Did somebody use drugs within the last seven years?' and I will be glad to answer that question, and the answer is 'No,' " Mr. Bush told The News.

Maybe GWB could go on Oprah and talk about what a difficult childhood he had and how sensitive he was so he sought solace in chemicals for awhile, and going through that has made him more empathetic with those who are downtrodden. They could hug at the end, maybe even shed a tear. His numbers would skyrocket.
