FC_Fan,

I am interested in learning more about FC switching products. Usually with competing products, the different design approaches result in different performance/benefits for a particular application. You have stated that you have a personal preference for Brocade switches. Is this preference universal or are there applications where you would prefer to use an Ancor switch. If so, why? If not, why not?

It has been my experience that disinterested engineers will use different products for different applications to take advantage of the relative strengths of each product. The exception to this approach is if there is a high learning curve to use each product optimally, and it isn't worth the engineer's time to learn both.

Can you think of any applications where you would select an Ancor switch instead of a Brocade switch?

Greg

hey FC Fan,

i like reading your posts. i must say that they are at least provocative. ;-)

you are of a different opinion than i am. that is what these boards are about so please keep up your postings! i don't think Ancor's stuff is clunky. reminds me so much of Rizeball's comments (in Yahoo)a LONG time ago about Vixel's stuff being a "clunky...contraption." ;-)
i've seen Ancor's stuff, talked with those who have used it and strongly disagree with your opinion. ;-) with the slew of oem's ancor has signed in the past year, i also can't help but laugh at some of your opinions. ;-) do you think hitachi, mtic, and Sun microsystems, etc. are joke companies? personally, i think sun is one of the most respected and well run tech companies in the world.

I believe that you seem a little blinded by your Brocade slant. i was wondering if you can tell us where you work? do you work for brocade or do you know someone well that does?

personally, i have respect for Brocade. i don't like them, but i respect them a little. ;-) met some brocade guys at Networld interOp and they seemed nice but a little cocky. ;-) they didn't look like they lived life on the edge like i have heard brocade employees do, but they rather looked like a couple of bad roller bladers. ;-) also, i just wished I owned their stock longer than i had. i sold my last shares at 105. ;-(

but i am biased, just as you say you are. i grew up just down the road from Ancor HQ and my little heart has a big heart for the hometown fella. i would like Ancor to do well.

You say--

<< But I am definitely biased in my product stance in this field. (As I'm sure everyone is in their field of work) In case noone can tell I believe Brocade to have the superior switch, as an example. Having said that I believe that I can (for the most part anyway) objectively discuss my reasons for said opinions. >>

at once you say you're biased, and then right after you say that, you say you can be objective. not to be an _ss, but i don't know if one can be biased and objective at the same time about the same subject? ;-)

what are your favorite FC software plays, btw? I like LGTO and VRTS. What are some other good ones? i would love to discuss this.

cheers,
pigboy
