Insurer's liquidity crisis jars U.S. money funds

By Cal Mankowski

NEW YORK, Aug 18 (Reuters) - A liquidity crunch at a St.
Louis-based life insurer has thrown a scare into U.S. money market funds, although fund companies say the problem is small and manageable.

The problems first came to light in late July when ARM Financial Group Inc. (NYSE:ARM - news), a Louisville, Ky.-based investment company, said it ended a partnership agreement with General American Life Insurance Co. of St. Louis and that General American would ''recapture'' some $3.5 billion in assets that were in a reinsurance agreement.
