I think we're overlooking a key bit of psychology which is at work here. Ebbers feels screwed because he did not buy his switches from Lucent. He bought them from Ascend, and then, not by choice, he gets stuck having to deal with Lucent's lousy service. It's like if you go to the dance with the prom queen, and you end up going home with Carrie.
