Hello Gustave, I wouldn't say I am a "fan" of the SSPX. I am a fan of the Knicks and Jets. I am a parishoner of the SSPX. Actually, a part time parishoner. I divide my time among the Traditionalist fraternities.

Over here too, most Catholics expect their leaders to be mild mannered fellows. Thats the problem. We are being killed by niceness. The Church is crumbling around us but, oh, the local priest is so "nice".

You're right about the Catholic faith being a culture, not a disembodied faith. The SSPX has a base of operations up in Saint Mary's, Kansas, about a 5 hour drive from here. In the middle of the American prairies we have a town which in many ways resembles a medieval European village. I have a friend who is a professor at the academy and I visit there about 3-4 times a year. We smoke cigars and talk about how to revive Chivalry and the possibilities of restoring the Habsburgs or Bourbons, (don't 15% of the French people support this?) but we don't really expect it to happen any time soon.

One interesting thing they are trying to do is introduce a self-contained economy based on Chesterton's and Belloc's ideas of Distributism. There are enough people there to make it work, we'll see how it plays out.

Regards, Charles
