Motor-cycling in India

If you are interested in travelling on a bike in India the following travelogue may be of interest to you.

You can rent or buy a bike, the best bike for long distance travel in India is a Royal Enfield Bullet 500cc.

Here is some information on Royal Enfield

Company homepage
royalenfield.com

Other info
motocafe.com

You can get a new 500 cc bike for about $1500 or so, a used
one probably for much less than that. All the other bikes available right now are smaller and very uncomfortable for long trips.

If you don't like to travel by yourself you can seek the help of a travel agent who arranges different safaris including motor bike, here is one. There are many others you can find them on the web, there is even guy in Kansas who conducts bike tours couple of time a year in India.

Hotels:
I believe you may be able to stay in a 3 or 4 star hotel with A/C and everything for something like $30-50 a night (may be even less in some locations) depending on the location.

Re: hotels - sorry cant help. never stayed in one. Indians typically have and live with relatives everywhere they go. I do know 5-satrs a couple of years back were around Rs. 8000 per night ($200 approx).

If you are in Bombay you could stay in hotels behind Taj Mahal for around $25 per night.

Meals are cheap if u stay away from 5-star hotels (48% sales tax. I think its waived if you pay in $$). cost in average good restaurant $10 for a VERY GOOD buffet lunch and lower from there.

Re: transportation. In cities take the bus, train or cab. murder but great experience. In the villages bike will work. get a motorized bike for around $50-$100 new. All towns and cities have good
