truedog, a lot of people really liked Richards and her loss to Bush was really slight as I understand it. I wasn't living in Texas at the time... thats just what people told me. She was popular nationally, profiled on 60 minutes and was the speaker at the Dem convention (remember the "silver foot in his mouth" comment) I don't think many would call her term a debaucle and fwiw if GWB wasn't a Bush (which inspires a kind of Kennedy-like awe in Texas I discovered) then I doubt she would have been voted out.

Hey TD, Collin Powell said that he was a Republican, when everyone wanted him to run last time. The Democrats were hoping to snag him, so they were disappointed.
